Philosophies of Mana (Extended Edition), Thursday Per 3

Honestly, she should have expected it. It wouldn't be a semester in the Danger Shop if something hadn't gone awry. She thought she'd seen the worst of it when the Danger Shop had shoved them into a sim about green zombies that battled against plants, but she realized she was wrong as soon as the program started and the class found itself in the the center of Myra the Magnificent's Intergalactic Astrotorium of Fun. This impression wasn't lessened any when a pack of small children, each of them wearing a child-sized distinctive blue robe barreled through their group. And, when she turned around and saw that they were standing directly in front of Urza's Fun House, her temper snapped.

When she found who had programmed this damned theme park into the Danger Shop, she was going to floss her teeth with their tendons, she didn't give a damn who it was.

( It didn't explode, which is a disappointing first for us.--Izzet League )

"I've spent ten weeks thus far explaining the philosophies of mana and how to figure out how to find what color pairings have in common and how to discover their points of contention. So, go off and explore this godsforsaken theme park and, at some point, come back and tell me literally anything you can figure out about the pairing of blue and red. Something that points to their commonalities, their differences, something that makes you think that it somehow captures some element of that pairing. Make it at least semi-logically consistent is truly all I ask. I will be waiting in that restaurant over there, where it is slightly quieter." No, she wasn't pointing to the concession stand shaped like a giant, sloppy hamburger, but the more staid and expensive restaurant near it, with rich purple, gold, and black decor. The one called Grilliana's, yes. She would absolutely not be referring to it by name, thank you.

comments

Liliana's Office, Thursday

Had Liliana stayed after class for a little while, playing in the arena herself? Maaaaaaaaaaaaybe...

Listen, it had been a very long time since she'd been able to let loose. Well, there was that dustup with Emrakul, but she wasn't counting that, for reasons.

Valor's Reach specialized in two-on-two combat, maybe a return trip out to Kylem would be something to consider...

comments

Liliana's Office, Thursday

Liliana was scrolling through her phone, looking at warm places. Carnival in Argentina was very late this year, not until mid-February, which meant that while they certainly could go to their Argentine villa to celebrate Ignis' birthday, they could also choose to go somewhere else and visit the villa when Carnival proper was happening.

Wherever they went, however, Liliana was demanding that it be warm. None of this snow nonsense. She'd book them a trip to the Jund, first.

comments

Warm and Comfortable Mansion in the Snow-Covered Woods, Monday Mid-Morning

Liliana woke up, looked out the window, and laughed at the very idea of going to work in this kind of weather. Absolutely not. Her existence as a shopkeep was on sufferance at the best of times, which this was not. Her job for today was to entreat Ignis to help her discover how many different warm beverages she could drink before dinner, and possibly to discover the minimum amount of clothing she could wear without being unduly bothered by the outside chill.

...Both of which she'd get to after sleeping a little while longer. Nothing about this weather made getting out of bed desirable.

Hmm, perhaps she had been too ambitious with those aforementioned jobs. A better idea might be to convince Ignis to come back to bed and stay there with her for the rest of the day...

Regardless of what she was doing, it wasn't going to involve leaving the house--unless they were portaling somewhere warmer instead.

[Establishy, but certainly open for texts, callers ridiculous enough to go out in the cold, and, of course, the gentleman so referenced!]

comments

Liliana's Office, Thursday

The third week of classes and Liliana was only just now having her first office hours. Still, she was certain that if anyone truly needed to reach out to her for some reason or another, they could have. It was not a particularly large island, after all.

Still, the door was open (unless she had a particular visitor, ahem), and she was present, even if she was more concerned with touching up her manicure than anything academics-related. That could change when someone bothered to stop by and not before.

comments

Plane of Lorwyn, Thursday Afternoon (Fandom Time)

Liliana arrived on Lorwyn in a chilly swirl of inky black vapor--and immediately gasped at what she saw. It was night. On Lorwyn. It was never night on Lorwyn! Lorwyn existed in perpetual midsummer and eternal daytime; there was dawn, noon, and dusk, but the sun never actually set. Each day began when the sun grazed the eastern horizon and ending as it grazed the western. There would be a final flash of light, and the sun would once again start rising on the east.

The bedroom in her old tower had been in the center of the edifice with absolutely no windows, for fairly obvious reasons.

And yet, here it was. Not just dusk, but full dark. Above her was a darkened sky with stars, though there was no moon. Rather than the deep forests and rolling plains that she remembered, the whole plane seemed devoid of greenery at all; there were swamps and fens, with barren tree branches clawing at the sky. Normally, she was all for swamps and fens, but this was...this was...she wasn't sure what the hell this was, actually. A chill wind blew and Liliana shivered. She had never shivered on Lorwyn before; she'd never needed to. But gone was the warmth of summer, there was a bite to the air that suggested winter was on its way.

Winter. In Lorwyn. What was this Multiverse coming to?

There was only one thing to do: return to Glen Elendra and ask Queen Oona what in the Abyss had happened here--and if she needed her Left Hand to deal with it.

comments

The Creepy But Hardly Abandoned Mansion in the Woods, Wednesday Morning

In front of her was a village; a familiar village, not in itself, but in its kinship with others. Liliana knew she knew the kind of folk that would live in that village, but here, now, she couldn't recall. A high wall cupped what looked like a large and somewhat irregular assortment of buildings, with a tall central watchtower nestled in the middle of the settlement itself, but the doors and homes weren't sized for humans, but creatures much shorter. Halflings, perhaps, or goblins or--

Her musing was interrupted the alarm bells in the watchtower began ringing outside. It was a raucous, clanging sound, metallic and overwhelming. She put her hands to her ears and shrieked as the sound changed, becoming somehow even more discordant, somehow almost twisted. She had been standing in broad daylight a moment ago, but now it was the color of dusk. Up, in the sky, there was a vast aurora, twisting with light and color and somehow eating the sky. No, not the sky. The sunlight. Where the aurora sailed, twilight followed, the sky overhead erupting into deep blue spangled with stars in stars, the sun becoming a thin eclipse ring of fire in the distance while the moon sprang to sudden, total fullness. The transformation on the ground was much more startling. Everywhere the darkness touched, the city was transformed. The wall grew higher, topped with long spikes pointing both inward and outward. The ladders vanished, making the territory impassable. The buildings nearest the wall remained the same shape but sprouted spikes and bars along their windows, the spirals worked into their architecture growing more tangled and defensive. Even the doors grew narrower, making it easier to shut them against the world. Around her, the grasses withered and died, the flowers largely following, even as some sprang to greater, glowing life.

Liliana looked around a world wildly changed, one known to her and yet fully unknown. As surprise catapulted her towards awakening, she realized she could smell one thing that was familiar: moonglove blossoms.

In bed, Liliana gasped awake, the name of the plane she had seen in her dream crystalizing in her mind. "Lorwyn."

comments

Outside The School Gates, Saturday

Liliana had been informed that she was a faculty advisor for a new student, Sairis Karkaroth, which meant that going to today's picnic was mandatory, even if it meant going out in weather pretty much tailor-made for staying inside for. Perhaps next winter, they could campaign for an indoor picnic. With wine.

The rickshaw driver had nearly made it to the gates when Liliana stiffened, looking around wildly. She'd caught a stray bit of magic, which wasn't terribly surprising on this island, except for the type of magic. It was necromancy. "Hold," she called. She wasn't going anywhere until she knew what - and who - she'd caught wind of. A shade was summoned and dispatched at the speed of thought, and returned almost as quickly.

Come, it whispered in her mind. Found. Shades were not thrilling conversationalists, no. But whatever it was, it was not an immediate threat, and so she stepped out of the rickshaw and followed the shadowy form of her <s>spy</s> scout. It led her around a curve in the wall to a random bit of hedge near the school gate, to where a horse had been left.

But not just any horse.

A zombie horse.

A zombie horse she hadn't raised. And, considering how his magic worked, neither had Erasmus. Then who in the Abyss had?

"Come here," she ordered. The horse didn't move. Her eyes narrowed further; it had clearly been ordered to stay where it was. Mmm. That wouldn't do. "Come here," she repeated, this time backing up her command with enough mana that her scars lit up with purple light. That was enough to snap the other necromancer's control over the horse; they'd likely only put enough power in the order to keep the horse from wandering off, not to fight another necromancer for possession of it. "You're a wreck of a thing, aren't you?" she murmured to it, though it was clear that most of the damage had been done to it in life, not in death. "Time to discover who you belong to, no?"

And, more specifically, to discover whether or not a foe had come to Fandom Island.

[Mostly establishy, but open if anyone is interested! Zombie horse modded with permission]

comments

The Creepy And Christmassy Mansion in the Woods, Thursday, Christmas Day

The air still smelled faintly of cinnamon (the only reason she'd known it had been a Fandom thing was because Ignis had finished his holiday baking already), the snow was a fluffy white blanket on the ground and the trees, and Liliana sipped her coffee, just admiring the outside. She was a cosmopolitan girl at heart, she loved the pulse and rhythm and excitement of cities...but there was something about a snow-covered forest that just tugged at her heart.

(She knew exactly what it was, the Caligo had left an indelible mark on her heart the same way her family had, but, shh, we didn't speak of such things if we could help it.)

In a little bit, she'd have to get up and get ready for the arrival of the <s>handwavily invited</s> guests coming over for Christmas dinner, but for right now, she was going to enjoy the small pleasures of a delicious cup of coffee, a room that smelled of pine, the warmth of Ignis and ignis both, and the sight of a veritable winter wonderland outside her window.

[Enh, up early for the holiday.
The Creepy, But Comfortably Furnished Mansion in the Woods, Monday Night

Liliana was going to send her steward to collect the remaining beanbags, braziers, blankets, and board and beverages, but as she and Ignis entered the mansion, she had a far more important duty to attend to first. "Get rid of this," she ordered, thrusting the lavender popcorn that Hannibal had made into his hands.

Her steward bowed, taking the popcorn tin. "Yes, Mistress."

"I don't wish to smell even the slightest trace of lavender, here or anywhere on the grounds," she continued, breezing past him and into the house proper.

"Of course not, Mistress."

"Very good," she said, and staunchly refused to think about it again.

[Mostly establishy and NFB (I tell myself, lol)]

comments

Lili had decided that she really wanted to sleep in the bouncy castle last night. Why? That was a question that even the child she'd been would have been hard-pressed to answer. Which meant that the woman who woke up in the aforementioned bouncy castle (now, significantly less bouncy and also significantly more deflated), had even less of an understanding how and why she'd gotten here. Truly, a philosophical conundrum for later, after she'd managed to solve the immediate mysteries upon waking of why her bed was so much less comfortable than it should be, and then figuring out where she was, and and then also freed herself from the collapsing nightmare of nylon and plastic.

Possibly much, much, much later, considering how hard it would fight to keep her in it.

Fortunately, the conundrum of 'rot my way free' vs 'but this is a rental was still several minutes in her future. (And also not particularly much of a conundrum. Like Liliana would care.)

[Mostly establishy, but open to anybody interested in the most shrug emoji of schedule as I travel home today.]

comments

Liliana's Office, Thursday

Now that Halloween was over, it was time to focus on the next major holiday. No, not Thanksgiving, don't be ridiculous. Liliana's birthday. There were so many ways to celebrate and she really should pick one. Or two. Okay, probably no more than three.

But which ones?

...And if Fandom turned her into a child for it again, she was going to invite the entire Cult of Rakdos to the island as punishment.

comments

The Creepy, Definitely Haunted Mansion, Friday Evening

When you let Tony and Liliana collaborate on something, you had to know that the results would be fantastic <s>if also potentially catastrophic</s>. Still, Ignis and Steve had finally relented and let the two of them put their extravagant and brilliant heads together and come up with a Halloween party spectacular (while occasionally advocating for one (1) bit of restraint, and for them not to ignore the 'laws of man and nature,' even to execute their grand vision. But still, Fandom could rest easy that tonight's Halloween party would have at least some moral and ethical guidelines. (Even if that had been incredibly rude to necromancers.))

The decorations started outside (because of course they did), sending arriving guests through the creaking, wrought iron gate into a haunted graveyard. The entire area was blanketed in a thick, roiling fog, lit by candles and lanterns, where ghostly apparitions appeared in thin air, wailing and beckoning people to come closer. A skeleton offered guests two options: they could go through the front door and experience the haunted house maze, or, if they wanted to head directly to the party, they could continue through the graveyard and enter the ballroom directly.

For those who dared the haunted house, they would find themselves in a professionally designed and fully staffed maze of ghoulish and terrifying rooms, where they might be chased by scary nuns who crawled out of walls, chainsaw-wielding maniacs, creepy little girls with even creepier dolls, and undead nightmares down hallways of chains, corridors festooned with spiderwebs (and sometimes the spiders themselves), and rooms filled with some familiar faces. (If a resident cares to look, they can find their head amongst the decorations, all of which were welcome to be taken at the end of the night as a souvenir). And it was a real maze, with portals through each doorway leading you to a different part of the mansion. At any time, however, a guest could speak to a staffer and be let through to head to the ballroom, rather than continuing through.

If the rest of the mansion was a spooky haunted house, the ballroom itself was an ossuary. Especially since they sometimes moved, shifting position to menace people before returning to their still state.

(Fun fact! Tony had discovered a way to grow real bone in minutes! What had started as fiddling with better prosthetics with the armor as a base had turned into a rabbit hole of the biological sciences! But now multiple hospitals had been given a cutting edge medical technology that could help them mend or create bone for patients, and Liliana had been able to craft various horrific bone creations, which she could control via necromancy, but with none of those pesky arguments about 'respecting the dead'.)

Don't worry, Ignis had made sure there were plenty of delicious party snacks (everything neatly labeled for people with dietary restrictions or allergies), along with appropriately spooky cocktails and mocktails to enjoy.

Happy Halloween!

[OCD is up!]

comments

Liliana's Office, Thursday

Liliana's office hours were going to be very abbreviated today. Their party extravaganza was tomorrow, which meant that there were am million things to do at home to prepare. However, that also meant that the mansion would be bustling about with various rented staff, decorators, housecleaners, and other assorted hired help. So yes, while she would be going home early, she was not canceling her office hours altogether. She was going to enjoy a nice, quiet, leisurely lunch and then head home to help orchestrate the chaos.

Too bad she hadn't left her phone at home, though.

"What do you mean you can't place the fountain there? Of course you can! Why wouldn't you--the chandeliers are there? Well obviously they won't be there tomorrow night! Then move them you--is Ignis not available? Honestly now, this is ridiculous."

comments

Liliana's Office, Thursday

Oh dear. Liliana had discovered game shows and was having a delightful time yelling encouragement and invectives at the screen. "Oh, come on! You can do better than that! You froze halfway through! Bah, do none of you think under pressure? You poor fools, Ignis and I would destroy the competition in this game."

That's right, contestants from 1995. You'd be absolutely wrecked.

"Though, hmm...would I be expected to run?" That might put a damper on things.

Give her a few more minutes and she'd start coming up with ways to cheat.

comments

Liliana's Office, Thursday

Her picnic during class had been illusory, which meant that Liliana was slightly peckish as she made her way to her office for office hours that day. It seemed like an excellent day to lounge on her divan with the book she'd been reading while her students had been exploring and some delicious snacks.

...While using her students' thoughts and ideas to fine tune the plans she had for her next few classes.

comments

The Creepy Mansion Unbothered By Guests, Monday Afternoon

The odds that Liliana would be going into work today after this past weekend were basically nil. Abyss, she wasn't entirely sure when she woke up that morning if she'd bother getting dressed today. It very much felt like a 'stay in a robe and eat ice cream' kind of day.

Eventually, she'd decided that she would be getting dressed, but not until after she indulged herself with a very long, very bubbly bath, complete with mimosas and a variety of fruits. If she managed to finagle a fiancé in with her, so much the better.

No matter what, though, she still wasn't going to work.

[Open!]

comments

Liliana's Office, Saturday

So. Jace and his little...Jacevengers (thank you Tony, Steve)...were here. That was fine. She had absolutely no problems with them knowing where she lives. Hearing about her life. Learning things about her. Gideon had actually looked at her yesterday with confusion (unsurprising, the man was a walking anotomical diagram, that didn't mean smart) and an almost glimmering of...respect?

Ugh, she hated that. Hated the idea that they'd see her as some kind of...poorly socialized do-gooder who secretly wanted to be good, just didn't know how. Or something. What was worse was that she had started that very idea herself by joining up with the Do-gooder Brigade to manipulate them into helping her finish off Raziketh and Belzenlok! But this was different. Somehow.

Double ugh.

So now she was pacing a furrow in her rug, trying to figure out how to get the other Gatewatch members off her godsdamned island and to never return. She could probably use lethemancy on Gideon and Chandra, but Nissa was more of a question and Jace...

Fucking telepaths.

Vessel of corruption... the Chain Veil whispered in her mind.

"Oh shut up," she snapped. "I have enough to deal with already today, I don't need a bunch of ghosts jabbering in my head as well."

comments

Liliana's Office, Thursday

Much like she'd spent her class, Liliana was sitting at her desk in her office. Rather than doing her nails, however, she was taking notes on the class, highlighting things to discuss in future lectures, suggestions to offer her students, both generally and on an individual level, aspects she should highlight or downplay in the future.

...And maybe an idea or two to incorporate into her own ghoulcalling in the future. Zombie media on this plane was absolutely ridiculous, but that didn't mean she couldn't use it for inspiration anyway.

Hmmm...

comments

Liliana's Office, Thursday

Office hours had been skipped last week due to ponification, but this week, Liliana was once more ensconced in her comfortable office. She was, however, not particularly comfortable. Instead she was pacing, or maybe it was more of a restless prowl.

How was she supposed to handle this? Even if Erasmus asked for lessons tomorrow, that kind of mental shielding required weeks, even months of practice. What was she supposed to do? Tell the boy he'd just have to live with it? In class?!

There wasn't much that Liliana considered important, at least when it came to other people, but, dammit, teaching was one of them.

"None of this would have happened if his ridiculous plane trained their sons, instead of just letting them crash out!" she seethed.

comments

Creepy, Fairly Lived In Mansion, Slightly Past Dawn, Wednesday Morning

Lili woke up not in her own bed, nor in her own bedchamber. Either of them; for all that it felt familiar, she knew very well that this wasn't her room in the manor where she was staying with Lady Ana, nor at the Fortress, where the rest of her family was staying. She was somewhere else entirely.

But again, somewhere familiar. It felt like a word dancing on the tip of her tongue; she could almost grasp it, but then it wriggled back out of her grip again.

...She did rather wish it were her room; it was far more luxurious than anything she'd ever seen in Vess.

It was right about then that she realized that she wasn't alone in the bed. "Serra's holy name!" she sputtered--which hadn't been the words she'd been thinking, but they were the ones that had come out anyway. "Hey! Who are--"

Wait. She knew this boy. Memories of trips to a weird island when she'd been a girl..."Ignis? Urzas's left eye, it's you!"

[For the young man so named, of course, but also very open!

comments

Wiz Chocobo Post and Surrounding Environs; Duscae, Eos; Saturday, Fandom Time

Listen, nobody needed to make a big deal about it or anything, but Liliana could, very rarely, bestir herself to rise in the (ugh) morning if she had sufficient reason to do so. And today she did, which was why she had, with a minimal amount of reluctance, woken up while Ignis was still dressing for the day and accompanied him out of their suite.

No, it wasn't because the bros were heading off for a day of fishing and reminiscences. If it were simply that, she would have thoroughly said goodbye to Ignis the night before and slept until noon without thinking twice about it. But, this was Duscae. Which meant there were chocobos to ride, swamps and the Nebulawood to explore, spiracorns and mesmenirs to <s>befriend</s> admire, and, most importantly, tombs to explore. Royal tombs. Who could sleep in with all that on their plate? It would be like sleeping in at Christmas!

So enjoy your fishing time, gentlemen. There was plenty here to do in your absence!

[A catch-all post for the folks what are in Eos! Who knows who will have time to ping into it because, lol, free time, but it's here for anyone with an idea and a few minutes here and there to play! NFB for distance]

comments

The Creepy But Very Luxurious Mansion In The Woods, Saturday Afternoon

Even so, your good nature and opinion matters to me.

It was odd, Liliana thought, lounging in her ridiculous bathtub, surrounded by lightly perfumed water and bubbles nearly up to her chin, how the most random sentences could affect you.

I would listen to your advice about breakfast.

Steven's words had been...well, not haunting her since the afternoon before. More like occasionally lurking underfoot, causing her to stumble over them when she least expected it.

( A simple thing. )

Ugh, self-reflection was terrible. No wonder she rarely bothered. She downed her glass of wine and quickly poured herself another. And considered, hardly for the first time and certainly not the last, whether it might not just be better to cut her losses and run.

comments

5 Times Urza Ruined Everything, Thursday, Per 1

Liliana was still in human form when class began today, so already that was a great start. "I was unavoidably detained during last class," she said, which could almost be an apology if you ignored the part where she didn't actually say those words and also didn't ask what she was unavoidably detained by. ( Two! Two lectures in one, ha ha ha )

A sip from her thermos of tea. "And that catches us up with times three and four where Urza ruined everything. Next class, we'll be jumping ahead about a thousand years to the Phyrexian War." She gave them a thin smile. "Don't worry, it gets worse."

comments

Karlov Manor, Precinct One of the Tenth District, Ravnica, Mondayish? Maybe? (Fandom Time)

For all that the weekend had gotten off to a very shaky start, to the point where Liliana had been very close to decamping from Ravnica altogether, the latter half of it had been a most satisfactory exploration of Ragefest. Their paths had mostly not crossed Summer's (and, more importantly, none of Summer's consquesst) as she was deeply in the thickest, wildest aspects of the festival, while Liliana and Ignis were staying to more...hmm, sedate certainly wasn't the right word for what was basically an entire plane's descent into madness via orgies of destruction, violence, sex, and drugs...but they were avoiding most of the rowdiest elements.

(Most. Even Ignis could occasionally fall prey to impulse and vanity, which was why Liliana had several pictures and a short video of him battling in one of the impromptu fighting pits that had sprung up around the Tenth District. Listen, she hadn't made him jump into the rings, but it wasn't her fault if she also benefitted.)

Now, however, they were firmly ensconced in the opulent luxury that was only possible when one had been wealthy for generations. The wealth on display was only rivaled by the debauchery and hedonism also on display. But this was more than just simply a Ragefest celebration, Karlov Manor was celebrating the return of its most prominent (living) scion, the Former Grand Envoy of the Orzhov Syndicate, Teysa. No expense had been spared to welcome Teysa home--a fact Liliana found very interesting, knowing what she did about Obzedat politics. (Which, admittedly, wasn't as much as she'd like considering the Obzedat was entirely made up of ghosts of long-dead Orzhov matriarchs and patriarchs, which really cut into her preferred methods of spying.)

But her curiosity only acted as a spice to elevate the rest of the experience. Passing bodies clutching one another in various figures and configurations and ducking past platters that held only the purest, most expensive (and some, most illegal) drugs, Liliana made her way over to their hostess. Like herself, Teysa was a tall woman with thick black hair, though Teysa was only half her age - though she also looked to be only in her thirties. As was befitting an Orzhov, she was dressed in black and white--and gold, of course. You couldn't be an Orzhov and not appreciate gold in all its forms--though, Liliana had often noted, Teysa's labret and eyebrow piercings had always been silver.

"Why, if it isn't the lady of the hour! Teysa, darling, hello," she said as she stepped around a triad in the process of losing what remained of their clothing and adroitly helped herself to a glass from a passing tray. From the slight rainbow sheen, it wasn't alcoholic but instead, a liquid narcotic. "Barely home a few hours and what a lavish spectacle you've already created!"

[For, well, me but also the gentleman accompanying her, should time and brains will it! NFB for distance]

comments
