It was...unsettling, almost. How much better Liliana felt in that kiss, like the way a dislocated joint felt after it was sent. Yes, there was still some hurt to work through, but everything felt right afterwards, even through that soreness. How could she not be...unsettled...when faced with that truth? So long as Liliana kept her happiness limited to herself, to her activities and diversions and pleasures, she was safe. Investing so much of herself and her happiness in another person left her feeling raw and vulnerable, neither sensation being one she particularly enjoyed.

But today and yesterday had felt worse. Was she ready to look more deeply into why that was?

Of course it did, her mind whispered. Your peace was disturbed. Your routine. He threw you all off. None of it has to mean more than--

Liliana deliberately turned her thoughts away from that little whispering voice, ignoring it the same way she did the whispers of the Onakke in the Chain Veil when they got too loud again and disobeyed her commands to shut up. The same way she was ignoring that that happened at all and what it could possibly mean.

"I've missed you, too," she whispered back, eyes closing. "The last few days...I haven't liked them. Could we...not?" She wasn't even sure what to ask for or what to call it. They hadn't been fighting, which would have been easier to explain. Just...distant. "I've tried to be patient, to give you room, but I don't like it."
