Griselbrand was dead.

She wasn't certain how many times she'd reminded herself of that fact, but the giddiness hadn't gone away yet. Griselbrand was dead and she was halfway to her freedom. Honestly, it hadn't even quite been four months since she'd killed Kothophed - at this rate, she'd be killing Belzenlok by Christmas and wasn't that a delightful thought. She'd have to think of a something extravagant enough to be appropriate for such a feat.

Hmm. She should be thinking of something extravagant enough to celebrate this feat. She'd slain Griselbrand, freed Avacyn, defeated the deranged Stitcher (was there any other kind?) that had murdered the lunarch, and removed a dangerous cultist from the Church's hierarchy. And that wasn't even counting the fact that Thraben had been saved by her allies. Honestly, Innistrad should have declared Wednesday 'Liliana Vess Day' and put on speeches and parades in her honor.

Instead, she'd been given a 'day's grace' by a self-righteous angel (again, was there any other kind?) before they'd hunt her down for the crime of being a necromancer. Ha! As if an angel's threats could keep her from going anywhere she wished to go. And unless this 'Sigarda' wanted to face the same fate as Griselbrand, she'd do very well to stay out of Liliana's way.

...nurtured the root...strong enough...the vessel...

"Shut up," she muttered at the voices in her head. "I'm not even wearing you right now." The Chain Veil was in its stand on vanity and, as much as she hated to admit it, part of her did want to get up to fetch it right now. Not to wear it, of course, but just to make sure it was safe.

Which of course it was. Who was going to touch it? Her steward? Of course not. Ignis? Hardly likely! A mysterious lurker who had proven that she could crawl up the walls?

Hmm...

No, that was stupid. The Chain Veil was fine where it was, she didn't need to check on it. She finished off her wine instead and poured herself another glass. And when that didn't help the impulse fade, she slid down under the water and stayed there until she couldn't stand it, breaking the surface of the water with a huge gasp. And see! No more worries about the Chain Veil! Everything was fine and under control. Which, for the record, included her magic. No, she still wasn't entirely sure what that vortex spell had been that she'd used on Griselbrand, or why it had felt inimical enough to intimidate her, but that was nothing, meant nothing. The Chain Veil was like any other incredibly powerful artifact: a tool to be used and nothing more. Sure, most artifacts didn't come with a million or so minds packed into it, but that was where the power came from.

Honestly, why was she thinking about the Chain Veil so much anyway? Now with Griselbrand dead, that left her mind free to focus on other things. She had a scheme percolating right now, in fact; it just needed a few more wrinkles ironed out and little embellishments added for flair and it would be perfect. She really did need to get on it, though; she was swiftly running out of time. Which was very ironic since running out of time had been why she'd sought out the demons in the first place.

...hallowed earth...where the seed took root...

"Oh just give it a rest already," Liliana sighed. Hmm. Perhaps she ought to spend a little time looking into what the Chain Veil was, exactly, beyond an artifact powerful enough to put her on equal footing with ancient demons. It wasn't like she could immediately turn around and start hunting Razaketh, not until she figured out what plane he was lurking on. Perhaps a short break until she unraveled the mystery of the Chain Veil and brought it fully to heel, and then onto killing Razaketh.

Excellent planning, Liliana. 10/10, no notes.

But before all that, she still had one last intrigue to pull off. In a very short amount of time.

She could do it, though.

Liliana Vess could do anything.
